For AutoXing, tracking, etc., I would think slapping on some 15" wheels with the correct tire size would be a good option to replacing the final drive. See analysis:

I swapped 15's for the stock 16's on my previous car, an '87 Porsche 911. It really worked well for autocrossing. My seat of the pants indicator really noticed the difference in acceleration off of corners.
One other advantage that you did not mention is that your car gets lowered by 1/2". Competition tire availability was the main motivator for me when I made the change on the 911. Coincidentally, the tires were the same as the S2000. I wanted to use V700's but they are not made in the 205/55-16 size as you know.
Please let us know if you determine that 15's will clear the brakes. I already have the tires, I wonder if the Porsche rims would fit??? No way am I that lucky.
