1/4 mile with 4.77
#43
B]XViper, whom I met in person this past weekend, thinks the 4.77's can give a supercharged S a run for its money.[/B]
do you really think that xviper...?
i don't think it would be close...and...I'd be willing to bet on it....and I have money...

Let's take the evidence we have that has already been posted and/or reported in the mags.
What we know:
Recalling "ItalianBuckwheat's" experiment with stock runs and runs done with 4.44 gears. He noted that without launching, he was able to do 0-60 mph between 0.4 to 0.5 sec quicker with the 4.44's.
Recalling what "Wesmaster" has posted about his quarter mile times with his Comptech and stock gearing, he has indicated his 1/4 mile times were better by about 0.5 secs, maybe slightly quicker (by 0.1 or 0.2 sec.) on some runs.
Recalling what we've seen in mags, Wesmaster's info is well supported.
So, we have about, at most, a 0.2 sec advantage with a S/C (stock gears) than with 4.44's and no S/C.
What we don't know:
0-60 mph times with 4.77's. It will require 1 more shift (into 3rd) to do this run. Will the extra punch of the 4.77's more than counter the time for 1 extra shift 0-60? And will that same extra punch of the 4.77's more than make up for a possible 2 extra shifts in the 1/4 mile?
We must assume the same driver does both (so same shifting).
Remember, I didn't say 4.77's in an otherwise stock car would necessarily "beat" a S/C'd car with stock gears. I said I think it would give it a run for it's money. And given the evidence, I still think it would.

I would like to further comment that changing final drive gears like this has been an "old" drag racer's secret and advantage since the 50's. This is nothing new. In almost all cases, increasing the rear end ratio will make the same car go quicker in the 1/4 mile regardless of the extra shift(s) AS LONG AS you do not over-gear to the point that you reach max "geared" speed of the car before the end of the track.

So will we ever get results from this? Out of the thousands of memebers we have, it's hard to believe that not ONE (1) person has done a 1/4 mile or 0-60 pass using the 4.77 gears set.

I wouldn't sweat a slower or comparable 0-60 4.77 versus stock. You'd still be ahead of the other car, even if he ran a hair quicker to 60. Cuz the 2-3 shift might take about 0.3-0.4 seconds during which time you are not accelerating but are continuing to move forward at speed.

Not all who have the 4.77's will run the track. Not everyone finds the need to know. I have the S/C and 4.44's and have never gone to the track.
