That is not true with the stacking tolerance problem. The grind is more prevalent when the box is hot.. that is why so many reported it at the first shift after a highway run. More will have the problem in the summer.

The reason is because the parts expand at different rates when hot and the sleeve is even more likely to force the gears together before the synchos have matched gear speed. The hot lube is thinner and does less to smooth the premature engagement.

I know there are some with trouble free cars that can not relate to this real problem, but it is real. As for those that think they can drive better and avoid it, ok maybe you can, but I have been driving high performance manual transmissions (without grinding) for over 30 years, and needed the TSB work on mine to stop grinding.

But the big question is does one mistake ruin the synchros enough that it becomes a perpetual problem? Speaking from experience years ago with a different Honda

An update on my car: Today I had a leisurely drive in the country and when I came back into the city, I had 2 1-2 grinds. This happened when the car was hot (as malachi mentioned) and it happened, even though I have been SUPER careful about shifting (i had the clutch way depressed before I touched the shifter). If this becomes a regular problem, I may think about going in and having a dealer look at it.....I don't want to cause any damage that doesn't have to be done.

I have an updated 2000 model. I ground 1-2 several times a week before the transmission fix (TSB). I'm not convinced that it is completely cured because I ground 1-2 once in Florida during the week I was down there. It takes hot weather for the worst grinding, so I am waiting for summer to draw conclusions.

slick,
go to your dealer immediately with this. you are damaging the gears and it should at least be on record.
