'04 exhaust, want more sound, same look
There's a whole backstory I could give here, but I'll keep it short.
I love the look of the stock exhaust on my 04. The way the exhaust tips fill out the cut-outs on the bumper and their chrome color are great.
However, the exhaust just seems quiet. My Dad's Miata has a better sounding note coming out of it. So I want to do something, but keep that stock tip look. What are my options? I was thinking of locating the resonator and trying to gut that out, or perhaps replace that section of pipe with a straight pipe. Perhaps just replacing the muffler, or gutting the muffler? Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
I'm not looking for performance gains all that much so much as a nice sound. Not loud, just nice.

Cut out the OEM mufflers and replace them with more aggressive ones and then have the muffler shop weld the tips back on. If all your looking for is sound this would be the cheapest route.
Or you can cut out the resonator and weld in a straight pipe, might make it kind of raspy though.
last option - I think spugen has an oval tipped exhaust that might look pretty similiar to stock, if you want a whole cat back system

The stock mufflers are fairly large so if you had a pair of smaller mufflers installed the sound would change. Hard to predict weather the change would be pleasing to you but it probably would be IMO.

The supersprint exhaust has the same style tips that you're looking for. It's an expensive exhaust, but i've seen nothing but good reviews about it.
One of our local members has it and it is VERY LOUD!
Louder than an Invidia !

Replace rear muffler with Magnaflow's 2.5" in/out, use stock tips
Refabricate the Y-section, as the Y-pipe is area of constriction (stock just jams the two smaller pipes into the midpipe). You then have a true Y-pipe
Add a test pipe and keep the center resonator. You'll get a nice deep sound, minimal to no droning, lightened weight, and all looking stock.
