To Summarize for North American cars:
1) '00 and '01 cars with plastic rear window and no hardtop have no defroster button. These cars have a blanking plate to the right of the steering wheel on the dashboard and a small bin located behind the cup holder in the center console.
2) '00 and '01 cars with hardtop have a defroster button located in the center console just behind cup holder and the blanking plate to the right of the steering wheel on the dashboard.
3) '02-'03 cars with a glass rear window and no hardtop have a defroster button located on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel. They also have a small bin located behind the ashtray in the center console.
4) '02-'03 cars with a hardtop have BOTH defroster buttons, one to the right of the steering wheel on the dashboard that operates the glass rear window and a second one in the center console behind the ashtray that operates the hardtop defroster.
Anyone have an answer as to where the defroster button is located on '04s with a hardtop? Is there a second one?
I'm curious about the G.B. GTs with only one defrost button. I thought the reason for the two different buttons in North American cars was to allow the operator to actuate the defroster that is needed. For example, with the hardtop installed, I wouldn't want to turn on the soft top glass window defroster since it will heat up the top that is laying against it. Maybe there is an automatic defeat for this function when the top is lowered in the GTs?

Do you have a hardtop? The convertible top glass rear window defroster button is located on the dashboard to the right of the steering column. The defroster button located on the center console in '00 - '03 cars functioned only for the hard top defroster. I don't know what happened to the latter button.

it also works on the 02-03 soft-top models, with glass window instead of plastic,

Sorry, but the MY01 require a different type of switch (push on, push off) than the MY02,03 switch( momentary switch, rest of logic is computer controlled). As it turns out, I have the only solution(s) for the conversion that I've seen described here. Its on my webpage, somewhere. Your choices are: revise the stock dashswitch (minor surgery to implant a push-on/push-off switch in the original switch body and build a short wiring harness to run the circuitry to the dash location) or build a small circuit board(requires circuit board construction skills: I came up with a circuit that you can build that uses the original dash switch: push on/ push off, times out after an elapsed time that you choose during construction).
