Good lord. That's insane. Registration is about $60/year for me. (Well, almost - I have a special personalized plate that adds $80 on top of that.)

I don't know what you are talking about, my personalized plates in CA cost $40 to start and then $25 each additional year.

Maybe you got the really expensive ones, but you can get them for the above prices.

Tags in South Carolina are fairly cheap, around $ 30. The catch is that you must show a receipt for your property taxes before purchasing the tag. The tax was $1200. (every year)!!!!! Who said living in the South was cheaper???

If you move to MD they charge you sales tax all over again! 5% somewhere in the vicinity of $1,900! Of course they cut you a break after that, you only have to re-register every 2 years at $75.

perhaps there is a difference between first time new car registration and renewal. i have my renewal notice in front of me and it breaks down like this in socal...

registration fee $30
vehicle license fee (aka VLF) $646
weight fee (glad the fat ass cars pay more) $0
special plate fee (no thanks, don't need people remembering my plates easier than required) $0
county/district fee (this is where diff places in CA can differ)$9
owner responsibility fee (dunno...CA will tax you for air if they could) $0
smog abatement fee (now i hope that the gas guzzlers and the old 'classic' (yeah right) cars pay up the wazzu for this) $6

total: $691

HOWEVER: There was a VLF offset by some recent legislation...most likely due to our state surplus that has been since eaten away by emergency power purchases -$436

Total renewal $255

or i can file a planned non operation for $10...yeah right.
