what the heck was that noise?
Ok, I'll put this in the open to start with - I'm a mechanical idiot. Always have been. So, maybe this question might seem obvious to some of ya'll, but I figured that someone here could answer....
Last night cruising home on I35, minding my own business of course, I hear that ticky tacky sound of the ole folger can muffler mod going at it pretty good. I look over and there's a mitsu eclipse coming onto the interstate and he wants to play.
We get to a point where there's no more traffic in front of us, and not being one to wait around, I downshift to 3rd and pull pretty strong on him, probably got a car length right off the bat. As I'm starting to shut down around 90 and go enjoy a comfortable drive home, I hear this bizarre wooooooosh, and then a real high pitched wistle and the bitsushiti pulls back up to about even with my door and doesn't gain any more.
I motioned the guys in the mitsu up to ask what the heck was that damn noise, but with my top down, I couldn't hear jack s*it. We all grinned, gave thumbs up and went on our merry way.
Can any of ya'll tell me what you think that noise was? Turbo?
Thanks, and
Cheers!

Sounds like a BOV (Blow-Off Valve) to me. Probably aftermarket, since most OEM BOV's are relatively quiet. An upgraded BOV doesn't necessarily imply an upgraded turbo, though.

But most people who change the BOV do the intake and downpipe mod too. I helped my son-in-law do this on his Eclipse and it was a piece of cake. He still has the stock turbo but there's a big difference, seat-of-the pants and by the boost gauge.

Not really, adding an aftermarket bov will allow you up the boost on a stock turbo. I'm not talking anything major but it'll give you a few more pounds. After doing the basics on my old 97 gst, intake, bov, boost controler and exhaust, I was up around 220 to the wheels. Eclipse weight around 3100 or so depending on the model gst, gsx....still no match for the s2k.

I was running around 15psi...I say around because it would spike to 19-20around 3500rpm smooth out to 15 and after 6000rpm (7k redline) it's fall off to around 13. GSX have the tendancey to eat trannies, 400whp and 5000rpm drops on an awd will do that though

On my EVO, the turbo makes a whistling sound when I'm on boost (kinda a "ssssssss" sound). The BOV then makes the familar whoosh made so popular in FastNFurious. The reason people upgrade the BOV is to hold boost. The stock BOV is plastic and can leak at higher levels of boost.
