Default VS 350z...first race ever!

me: MY 02 with single spugen Ti. exhaust (installed today). dropped on tein flex. NO other mods.

him: 03/04 350z 6-spd, lowered, exhaust, nismo intake, 18" gtc.

we saw each other leave @ a local mall and stopped to check out each other's rides. cool guy w/ a nice car...car has a body kit and really nice gold gtc. chitchat for 5min. or so. i left the parking lot to head home and i see him following me. fortunately, his home was in the same direction as me.

we hit a local hwy, 55mph zone. he flies by and slows down for "a little something"...so i knew that for the first time in the s2000, i get to race a car!!! and then i hesitated...

why?

this is my first manual car.
i have had this car for less than 3 months with 3,000 miles of driving.
evidently he can drive since he has had many other manual cars in the past...
and...i knew from reading on this board that s2k v.s. 350z = driver's race.

heck...why not? i gave it a shot. we were cruising side by side at 60-65mph. my front bumper was by his front wheels and we hit the pedal at the same time. i had downshifted to 3rd at this speed with my foot all the way down...off we went

almost at the end of 3rd, i noticed myself barely trying to line up with his front bumper...i tried not to bounce the rev limiter (and i didn't ), but I don't know if i shifted on the red...4th i went and we are pretty much steady...no one is gaining...speed increases to 110-115 and the Z gains another wheel length on me...at 123-125 we hit the brakes with a trophy to the Z driver for leaving my front bumper right on his rear bumper...

this is my first time ever racing...ever...this is my first manual tranny car and i only drive it 1-2 times a week for less than 30 miles each day...(weekened).
only performance modification is the spugen single exhaust which was installed today.

give me a grade...do i deserve a B+? how did i do?

You'd done well. I've heard the Z has a little more top end at such speeds, even more if your top was down.

I dont think it would matter if the top was up, I think they are just quicker up top. You did very good though for so little experience.

my top and windows were up/closed. his windows were closed as well. so with more experience, what outcome should i expect from racing this guy again?

You did very well, considering your lack of experience.
Its a drivers race, with more experience there is definitely a good chance that the outcome would be different next time

I also believe that the 350Z is slightly stronger up top, but not a huge amount of difference between the S2K and Zed either way you look at it.

With experience, i.e. you shift faster, you may be even with him next time.

Btw, top down makes huge difference. For example, if your top was down, you could've lost by 2-3 car lengths instead of just 1.

I agree, and that's why i asked. It seems , from my personal experience as well as stories i heard from others, top up/down could make about 2 car lengths difference from 30 to 100 or so.
