I wouldn't be so quick to call them weak cars there pal.
I owned a MKV w/ Stage 1 APR and it was pretty quick for less than $600 spent.
I'm on my 3rd S right now and let me just say this....from a stop I beat many AP1's and the same from a 1st gear punch.
Driver mod is key.

Most factory built turbo cars aren't showing much of it's potential. Little bit of money can release good hp.
What are you driving now?

Also, you were following him, correct? Meaning you were probably getting a bit of a draft off that high-back hatch of his... I would like to see you line up and go! Worst case scenario is you lose a race... Not the end of the world.

i had a mkiv jetta 18t. it was a lot of fun, not too expensive to mod, and you could be fairly quick for what it was. i will not call it fast. 12's is fast. but it def was quick. i remember one time i ran an lt1 camaro from a first gear roll and by 100mph i was still right at his door. his buddy was not happy. i was laughing my ass off.
anyways, reflashes work great on euro cars becuase they size the turbo so damned small you can over boost down low and feel like your hauling ass. but up top it dies
my jetta had the following:
apr 93, apr 100, stock, valet
3" tb exhaust with a sweet turn down tip hiding behind the rear valence
mbc and h valve to trick boost into max hairdryer setting <didint care about that turbo>
aem cai
some other stuff but that was the go stuff.
heres some vids of when i had it.
one of the boost gauge, notice the downhill boost

also ran an upsolute modded jettta both of us on 100 octane specific programs. this vid is from the other jetta, not mine.

ran a stock srt4 with me on apr 100. then i ran him in the last run on apr93. you can see the night and day difference. the last vid is from the srt4. the first couple with me on apr 100 i had passenger and he was alone.

and ran an auto 350 z from a dig.

last, ran an s2k on this board from back in the day. this was a 60-130 run. yeah, that headlight is my hairdryer powerd jetta trying its best. and this was on apr 93 octane. apr100 would have been an easy 2 cars. so much more timing in that program. the s was stock, so he says. both of us had one passenger.

Next time it will be side by side, then we'll see. yeah he used to have a mkiv vr6 gti (24v) with intake and exhaust and he would surprise a lot of people with that thing, and with exhaust it sounded pretty good for a 2.8. But once he got over 70,000 miles it just started having all sorts of problems.

We had a good race, neck and neck. If I remember correctly I ended up at the end of your rear bumper.

I missed the S a lot so I bought a brand new 2007 w/ lip and factory wing. Imola Orange too.
The GTi was super nice for what it was. Before I got rid of it I raced a few of my buddies
350z w/ injen intake and Tanabe exhaust 6sp track pack...I put a car length up to 4th gear.
06 Si I raced him on my stock 200hp setting and put 2+ cars on him to 4th gear....turned it up to 93 octane and destroyed him.
I toyed with the idea of getting the Z06 this year but I have no room to store it. I take the S out on good days, but otherwise it stays in the driveway.
