Hopefully you will win and then you can go onto the GM boards and complain about rattles and handling.

hey now..all us camaro owners don't have mullets or live in the bronx...i in fact live in jeresy and have short spikey hair...hmm..that doesn't help much does it?..ah well...but seriously SS vs S2K stock? I think that's pretty much a rhetorical question and from other threads and posts it seems like nastinupe doesn't care much for the s2000 anyway...

I actually like the Camaro (so don't take my note as an insult) but no car in the price levels we are talking about will have everything.

Bone stock SS' dyno usually in the 300-310 hp range so be advised the rated 320-325hp (depending on model year) for the SS is as expected from GM, woefully inaccurate. My '00 SS dyno'd at 306 bone stock and with just a Borla cat-back, lid and few other items, went back to the dyno and nailed a 327.7 rating...essentially about 385 crank horsepower, give or take a few ponies. Stock, the LS1's are closer to 340-350hp. They aren't as nimble as our S2000 of course, but that's not their bread and butter. On the right roadcourse with a decent amount of straights, they can hang with us though (assuming driver skill is somewhat equal of course). A stock S2000 against a stock SS is a waste of time in just about any arena of acceleration. Why bother? FWIW, mine got 28.7 mpg on a trip to Maine which was only 1.2 mpg less than the S2000 nailed on the same trip six months later...not bad for an 8-cylinder. Then again, it was due to the 6th gear which at 70 mph, is cruising along at about 1800 rpm's.
Here's a pic of my own pre-S2K choice of ride, sans mullet. You'd want a turbo or well-tuned S/C'd S2000 to tangle with this one...a 12.81 1/4 mile car with only $1500 worth of non-nitrous mods. BTW, the mullet comments are as old as the rice-boy ones. I sold my SS for the Honda but there is always something cool about being slammed into your seat at your heart's (and right foot's) desire.
I'm a car enthusiast first, a brand loyalist second and have never worn a mullet.

Camaro SS Thunderhill Park roadcourse 2:16.46
Z06 2:08.39
S2000 2:17.66
NSX 2:14.15
MB SL500 2:16.05
MB SLK 320 2:20.87
Boxster S 2:17.46
911 Turbo 2:10.73
BMW Z3 M (240 HP) 2:17.28
BMW Z8 2:13.20

same driver, same day

Z3, Boxster S, S2000 all 2:17's. Seems OK to me!!!!

The Camaro Z28, or one of its variations, has always been an excellent car for roadracing.

Since 1995-ish GM' s ponycars have dynoed with the almost the same (+- 5 or 10) rearwheel HP as the corvette.

For a good reference as to what an S2000 can beat on a roadcoarse refer to the January 2001 issue of road and track.

Ok... I have calmed down now. I was stupid for racing this dude on the free way, but I didn't expect him to pull away from me like that.

I complain about the S becasue I paid for it... so I have that right. The car is still a great car. It just got whopped in the strights, that's all. No biggie. I know what this car can do in curves, I drive them all the time. There is nothing more fun than to get on a twisty road and rev the hell out of my S hitting the curves.

I know that I have to trade one for the other, but of course it would be nice to have both a strong engine as well as great handling. My main gripe with Honda is that they could have made the engine of the S stronger without sacrificing too much weight gain. The Z4, and Boxter have 6's, and they feel almost as good as the S in the corners. So why couldn't honda throw an I6 producing 300 Hp and 260 lb/ft of torque into the car? They could have forgone the power top, and gave the car the option of having run flats instead of a spare tire. Eliminate that poor excuse for a glove box and add an 8 inch speaker that is turned sideways facing the driver, sort of like the Viper. Throw in a clock on the fold up plate and make the CD controls projected on the windshield of the car like the corvette has and you have one mean machine.

jimr,

It should be noted that there are half a dozen S2000's running sub 2:12s at Thunderhill this June and it was very hot! Lap times indicate how a particular car and driver did on a particular day but that doesn't indicate how a particular model of car will perform. The best time at TH this year was our own krazik running a 2:08 (I think). Even I ran better than a 2:17 with brand new RA1 tires that were slippery as hell.

A further illustration of this can be found with me besting the times of many Vipers and Willow Springs, a track with cornering speeds in the triple digits. If the S2000 faster than the Viper? No.

That aside, the SS is a very fast car, especially in a straight line at any speed. A well driven stock S2000 can keep up on most road courses with a similarly well driven SS but not all. Some of the S2000's cornering speed advantage is given up by the exit accelleration of the SS, especially on a track with long straights.

They are fairly evenly matched with the SS taking hands down any kind of straight line accelleration battle. No contest.

Shouldn't this be in 'Street Encounters'?

just my opinion, but this thread is borderline. It's not as much a boast about a race as it is a complaint about the car from an owner.

Dan,

I think that nastinupe has voiced this same complaint multiple times in this forum already.
