s2k vs sti highway race
#4
Here is my question:
In comparisons with the S and Evo, some state that with the drivetrain loss and other factors, the S can either stay with or slightly pull on an Evo (both stock of course) in the triple digit area when racing on the highway. Although I have yet to test this myself, it seems that it is a close race regardless.
Now, the Evo and STI are often compared, most saying the two are similar in speed (STI being slightly faster). Now, I would think the STI would stomp an S (again, both stock), but if what I hear about the S vs Evo and Evo vs STI, wouldn't it be a bit closer or does the STI truly rock the S's world?
Love all 3 cars!!
NOTE: My purpose is not to start an argument over the mentioned cars or the "rumors" on the internet. I'm just stating what I feel is accurate or partially true. Thanks!

The Evo has a weak top end. I've heard this talking in person to an Evo owner. He said he was pulled on by a slightly modifed GTI 1.8T (chip, intake, exhaust only) at high freeway speeds, whatever that meant. I'm guessing 110 and above. I'd expect the STI to have the same problems but not as bad due to the larger engine, higher power rating, and 6-speed manual. Most turbos don't pull very hard at the high end. They have tons of low and mid-range torque but lose it later. This was also true for my chipped S4. It almost seemed like it was better to shift into 6th than to stay in 5th at high RPMs on the freeway. I think the S2000 might have a chance keeping up (at best) with an STI only after well above 100mph.

The power on the STi dips after 6K rpm, and it redlines at 7K. From 6k to 7k it does slow down quite a bit, but if the driver realizes this then he won't shift at redline. If it has as much as a full exhaust, then the top end won't be a big issue at all. I think stock for stock, the S will have a chance if you did a 100mph roll on.
