s2000 vs. S8
i was driving on i69 in michigan this weekend and i had the pleasure of being tailed by a really cute girl in an S8. when she got next to me, i downshifted to 4th and tried to get her to race, but she just looked over and smiled, so i shifted back to 6th. Then she punched it and i had to downshift back to 4th. She pulled on me pretty good while i was in 6th and downshifting, but once i got in 4th, i started gaining on her, but after she pulled on me it seemed as if she let up. we drove along next to each other for about 25 miles, and raced a couple more times, each of which i think I won, but never were we lined up evenly or taking off at the same time, so i don't know how accurate the results were.
has anyone raced an s8 on a roll? when i first realized what was behind me, i was afraid that he/she might be faster, but from the 3 to 4 times we went from an 80mph roll, i believe that the S would win fairly easy. I know s8's have a lot of power, and they also weigh almost twice as much as us, but i thought that it would have put up a tougher fight.
oh yeah, all this took place on one of michigan's lovely highways...

Those S8s are pretty fast, made for autobahn cruising. My guess is that you would take him off the line, but he'd catch up in the long run (past 100mph or thereabouts). He's got 360 hp and a much lower drag coefficient.
Most of what I've read on the S8 say about 5.7/5.8 0-60 and 14.3/14.4 in the 1/4 @ 99mph. That's close to S2000 territory but not quite there (for well driven S2000s, at least). However, up above. Car and Driver got roughly equal performance out of the S2000 and S8 up to the 1/4 mile mark. I think the trap speed of the S8 is slightly higher than most S2000s so I would expect it to pull from there on.
On the highway, I'd say the S8 should take you - auto tranny is a nobrainer (just flatten your foot and go).

i suspect your cute girl wasn't much of a street racer.........
i've raced a fellow members S2000 in my S8 (i have both) and beat him from a dead stop to about 85-90 - maybe by 2 car lengths.
also raced another S2000 on the highway - put quite a few car lengths on it fairly quickly.
the S8 may be heavy (but it's not twice as heavy, as supertool states), but it has 120HP more than the S2000 and is plain "dumb" easy to drive fast....plus the kickdown feature which downshifts to the lowest possible "safe" gear - it's basically idiot proof.
those audi's can and will surprise you.......
regards.
