I don't normally street race, drive recklessly or support street racing however my brother and I had recently looked at one of these SRT4 Neons and I just had to give it a go to see how it compares to the S2000.

I was coming back from the Southampton (NY) on Sunrise Hwy right after the Hampton Bays Exit going westbound. A red SRT4 pulled right up along side of me doing about 70mph ... I had the top down.

Two runs.....1st run I was ahead of the Srt4 and ran up to about 110mph ... Appeared that the SRT was pulling harder and gaining on me as speeds increased however he was not able to pass me due to a car in the right lane. 2nd run the SRT4 was one car length ahead in the same lane as we took off from about 70mph again. Ran up to about 140mph and he pulled me like crazy as speeds increased. By the time I hit 110 he had to be doing at least 150mph-155mph and at least 10 car lengths ahead.

On both runs I shifted perfectly and ran right up to redline in each gear, up to 5th. I guess the top being down created a lot of drag as speeds increased I just didn't expect to get waxed as badly as I did especially since last summer I had an encounter with a newer 1999+ 996 911 Coupe and really was very close to the 911 with the top down in my S2000. The Srt4 would whip a $80k 911's ass.

What bothers me even more is that I recently drove an Evolution 8 and it felt much quicker than my S2000... much quicker....maybe the S2000 isn't as fast as I thought it was all along.

Great objectivity

I checked out the specs of the SRT-4 as well and was quite impressed. Needless to say, I won't buy a Dodge unless I'm looking for a truck, but I have to admit they sure did pack a lot of punch into something so small! It's a 2.4 liter 4 cyl turbocharged 215 hp ... with 245 ft-lbs of torque. Wow.

But the only thing I'm confused about is that I've heard the top speed to be 148 mph... If so, that guy must have really been pushing his car.

Also, the Evo8 shouldn't be compared to the S2000. Bone stock, the Evo8 is AWD and is supposed to have 271 hp with 274 lb-ft of torque (if I remember correctly). Sure, it weighs 400 more lbs than a S2000 but it also has a turbocharger.

The Evo8 and SRT-4 both have way better torque numbers (especially low end torque, with the turbos), but which would you rather drive?

One more thing to think about - has your car been serviced lately? Is the engine tuned and stuff? Because I noticed you have a MY00, and most likely (if you haven't tuned it since you've gotten it), it probably isn't up to spec. That could account for the 'slowness' you're feeling. Remember, you are comparing your three year old car to a brand new car fresh off the lot.

haha. yes, our little go carts are not the fastest car in the world. VTEC is fun and I AM SATISFIED with the top end power of the S2k. But it doesnt compare to the turbos. Ahhh.. I miss my college days. We used to go out to the country highway, like 10+ cars, and do all kinds of runs to measure whether a mod works or not. lol. We did things real scientifically too. 0-120, 15 roll to 120, 60-110, and etc etc. Anyways, the king of the bunch were the 2 eclipse GSTs our boys had back then. So yes, VTEC can't be compared to forced induction.

Top down kills top end acceleration. I mean kills it dead. You're talking about 10-15% more drag easily, which means 10-15% less acceleration.

You ran 100+ mph with the top down? THat's why you lost so badly.

Well, the SRT-4's power is underrated from factory. Most of them put out about 226hp and 248 ft/lbs to the wheels. That's more torque than an EVO and only a little less hp to the ground. Combined with light weight, they should be very quick. But still, in a 1/4 mi between an S and that Neon, it should be a driver's race. YOu lost the way you did because your top was down going 100+mph.

Having the top down isn't a good enough excuse.

The car is just not powerful enough at high speed, simple as that.

BTW Mich. A, are you a car salesman? so many cars....
