S2000 vs LT1 SS from 35mph-70mph.... in 6th gear???
Out of pure boredom. I mean literally nothing to do while we were cruising.....
Here's the setup....
I have a passenger, as does my friend in the SS.
We are both in 6th gear, and floor it, racing from 35mph to 70mph. I would expect to get walked because of the low end torque of the SS... right?
WRONG!
I started walking him ever so slowly right away. By 70mph I had 1 1/2 car lengths on him. WTF? Where is all their low end torque? We tried the same thing in 5th gear from 30mph-60mph and it was almost the exact same situation.
Anyone got any idea why???

I'm surprised he didn't stall being in 6th at 35mph. I'm not sure if the LT1 Camaro has the same gearing as the LT1 corvette I used to have, but I was only at 1500 rpm in 6th at 67 mph - He was probably below 1000 at 35

Are you sure this happened? 6th gear at 35 mph is under 800 RPM in an F-body. If that didn't stall the car it would certainly lug the living hell out of it. I've stalled my car while rolling before. Its the first stick shift I've ever driven, and I hit 6th instead of 4th getting on the freeway. Your friend started at a lower RPM than he idles at. I don't even shift into 6th untill 70+ because it lugs the engine so bad. 5th gear at 30 is under 1000 RPM, so you run into the same thing. Torque can't help you when you start a roll on race with the engine below idle speed. An S2k has much steeper gears, so you're not as low in the power band. The way you describe the races the SS didn't even hit 2k RPM .

Not sure about the LT1 but my LS1 would be around 1800 rpm doing 70 mph so I can't recall EVER having it at that low a speed in 6th. My guess would be it would be like trying to pull a tree out of a swamp with a go-kart. A fun race but essentially, meaningless.

Maybe we started closer to 40mph then. I know it was right around there... and we shut down at about 75mph (i was still pulling on him).
I, too, figured it was the tall 6th gear, which is why we also did a low rpm 5th gear punch. Though I didn't walk him as much, I still slowly pulled from 30mph to about 60mph....
It is interesting to see how gearing plays a role.
Wonder what all the mags would think of that experiment and the "no-torque" S2000. It's so convenient they leave out the effect of gearing...
