Letting someone go can still produce some unfavorable results. Obviously it's not going to be rainbows and cupcakes everytime, however it cools things down and produces the BEST CASE SCENARIO.

As far as where I've driven, I grew up in Philadelphia. Philadelphians are awfuly inconsiderate drivers. I now live in Clearwater Beach, FL. It's one of the top beaches in America and a magnet for tourism. Let's not forget raging Florida rednecks that assume I'm a tourist from my PA plates and avoiding the elderly.

I've delt with some road rage.

I think you did the right thing in just getting out of Dodge. Chances are he was pissed off to begin with and just found you as a target (he's probably pissed off he paid that much money for that pile of crap).

I remember when I was younger and driving my mom in the car, some guy was racing through traffic and I commented on what a jerk he was. My mom said it was best to get out of his way and pointless to get mad at him, because for all we knew, his family was in the hospital or there was some other emergency going on. After that, I just started letting things go. This jerk, on the other hand, was taking out his anger on you. The best thing to do is just to look out for yourself.

I commute about 25 miles [each way] on a 2 lane road everyday... Coming home at night I get people that turn their brights on after I make completely legal passes. It's just weird...

If someone is pulling on me, I'll slow down to let them pass on a dotted line- or pull over if there isn't one.

About 6 months ago in my other car (1.8t Jetta) was making my way through traffic on I80 outside Fairfield. Some dipshit in an Escort decides that he's going to be cool and follow me through traffic. Traffic stops. I stop. Dipshit doesn't notice, rearends me, pushes me into the ass end of an X5. $4000 damage to the Jetta, the X5 had some light blemishes on the bumper, the escort was just a pile and had no visible damage. Was a not at fault accident for me, thank god-- could've been really shitty though.

Very interesting story and opinions. I agree completely with everyone who said it's better to try to get out of the situation and far away from him and keep him behind you. No matter what you do....you can not control everyone around you. If he was so easily upset who knows the actions he couldve taken. He MIGHT have just been happy to be in front of you and keep going....he MIGHT have slammed his brakes on and caused an accident. The method you took obviously worked. If any of you are from the DC area you will know that when things get heated....you get out of the situation unless you're looking for trouble. We have road rage murders every week. Anyways....you got lucky that eclipse was there...I wonder if the guy got mad at the eclipse and started following him around.

That would have been funny as hell if he started following the eclipse around.

This is where a turbo and 300 HPs come in handy. Avoid the confrontation altogether. Find opening->Accelerate to 100+ with no one in sight or harms way->decelerate->calmly exit->Join freeway again once everyone involved goes by overpass->watch frustrated AssClown ahead of you boil in his hatred and low self esteem.

Another fun game I like to play is, "How shitty of a driver is the putz behind me." It goes something like this: Follow me into a corner at a legal speed, except I don't brake and keep going at that speed(because most drivers are robots and use your driving for information on what to do next), and late apex it with hard acceleration, hard turn into the inside pointing at outside apex, they slow down don't know how to negotiate the turn, you accelerate way to fast to catch up, if they're real psycho and nail you in the rear, they'll be understeering into the bushes, but you'll still be in control with slight oversteer.

If your life is in danger from a psycho road rager, let him rear end you offsett, brake real hard, let them plow you in the passenger rear so that they spin around and you can still countersteer and accelerate out.

This is fun when the guy behind you appears to be drunk, it pulls the drunk drivers off the road and straight into the bushes. A definite public service.
