Out of interest, does anyone know how the IS300's drivetrain handles big hp numbers?

Stock internals are usually good to around 500rwhp. To upgrade, people commonly swap out the short block from the GTE (supra TT) engine and mate it to the stock GE head (IS, n/a mark IV). These internals are good for, well, you know- supra bottom end is indestructible. These engines have much better internals, as well as oil squirters for each piston.

Stock 5 speeds crap out around 400rwhp (i have a 5 speed )
The common solution is to swap in the v160 getrag 6-speed from the Supra TT, but the swap costs between $8000-9000. It also requires swapping out your rear end or your gearing will be all ed up, as well as modifying the shifter location on the tranny, and custom fabbing a driveshaft (supra is too short, is300 is too long). This tranny is proven to hold over 1000hp. It's totally bulletproof. Otherwise, the R154 5-speed from the N/A Supra or even the older W58 from the Mark III can be used, and can be found cheaper. These should hold most reasonable amounts of Hp (<550rwhp).

Stock auto tranny is actually very strong, and can be race-built to be VERY strong for about $3,000. Simple valve body upgrades, increasing line pressure for better shifts, etc, will get you a long way, and isn't too expensive.

The rear diff holds up very well, should be good to close to 600rwhp, but I've known people with open differentials that have blown their diffs by spinning one wheel too fast off the line.

Essentially, the is300 engine is the same engine from the 98 VVTi N/A Supra, BUT:
1) compression is 10.5:1, rather than 10:1.
2) IS300 has thinner rods MUCH thinner if you compare them side to side, hence why people bend and throw rods over 500rwhp.

For my purposes, I think the drivetrain should hold up just fine. I'm preparing for the inevitability, however, that I will lose my tranny, in which case I'll have to fork out some ca$h. Oh well, that comes with the territory.

Hope this helps!

-Chris
