Now THAT is some funny stuff Pakisho, the real sad thing is that there are people out there that actually would do/say that to a car. As for the auto being quicker, maybe if you can't shift/launch.

No, I was going to say how nobody, no matter how quick you are, can shift faster than an automatic. They are quicker; they are more consistent. If you're drag racing, it's the only way to go. For road racing, an M/T would be preferable...

Not only does a conventional manual not shift quicker, it also has greater parisitic losses compared to a conventional manual. But, as others have said, an auto is CONSISTENT. And that is why drag racers prefer it to a manual, especially in bracket racing, where consistency is more important than speed.
To expound upon the parasitic losses comment, you have to realize that by the time you get into higher horsepower cars, the losses are minimal. For instance, pull out your back issues of motor trend or car and driver or whatever. Look through and find something like, say, the article when the new civic came out. You'll see that on a car with barely over 100 hp, the manual might be worth 2 seconds in the quarter mile. But compare say, an auto Z28 to a 6M Z28 and you'll see only about 2 tenths of a second or so (i'm pulling these numbers out of my head).
This is because those paristic losses are fixed, not variable. So for instance, the auto in the E55 won't be much slower than a traditional manual would be, cause your talking about a very small %. If you wanna get into parasitic losses on that E55, understand this. In the new EVO magaizine, Gordon Murray (designer of the McLaren F1) was talking about forced induction. He said the on the SL55 AMG (same engine as E55, different exhaust accounts for missing hp), the Supercharger is draining 91 horsepower at redline. In other words, that engine is putting out more like 580 hp, but 90 of it has to drive the SC.
