I was on my way to my cousins house in San Jose when "lo and behold" I see a brand spankin new SL500 (didn't have plates). Being the person that I am (who likes to coax pricey cars to a race) I did my best to safely proceed through traffic to catch up to him, but since this was Sunday noon time, traffic was thick so it was near impossible to catch up to him.

So I just went on my way and drove toward the freeway onramp and guess who I see trying to merge into my lane; yup, you got it right, Mr. SL500. Since there was only one car between me and him (he was ahead), I knew I would be able to try to coax him into a friendly acceleration test. Okay, so we both get onto the freeway and I'm just blazin' up 2nd gear onto 3rd, tryin to match speeds with him, when I notice that he is really mashin' (90+ and going). I then knew it was on. Third gear went by and I was at his rear bumper; fourth gear about 8K rpm and I was already creepin' past him. It felt good until I noticed that there was a car ahead of him (about 10 cars up), so I thought to myself that he must have braked early (bastard ).

Okay, next round; once traffic clears up he is matching my speed of 88mph (me being in 4th gear). I look over and he is smilin' and his pretty girlfriend gives me one of those bomb a$$ looks (all you guys out there know what I'm talking about ). Next, I hear him hammer the throttle. I simply floor it and stay in 4th (yeah, I know should've dropped it in 3rd, whatever ). 95mph goes by, he is one car length back; 124mph flies by, he is 2 and a half cars out back; 130mph and climbing . . .oh sh!t, gotta brake!!! I see two highway patrol officers on the side of the highway tending to a car that has its hood up. Knowing that I can't afford another ticket, I turnoff at the next exit and do my best to lose the cop (which luckily for me neither of them followed). By the way, before I exited the SL gave me a quick flash of the highbeams (good gesture). In return I gave him my hazards. It was out of courtesy, but mainly because I smoked him!

(note: when this incident occured there was no traffic ahead of the two cars)

Nice kill, I thought the SL would have been faster!

If you were going 88, you were right to stay in 4th!

That's a pretty good effort as I have a friend with the older model 500SL and that car is a lot quicker then I would have thought. I did a fair few runs with him and posted about it here:
https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...highlight=500SL

Also, the figures for the new 500SL, that are quoted above are far from best that I've seen published in a magazine, while the S2000's are probably the best (in particular the 0-100mph time). Here's the figures from Sports-Auto magazine for the new 500SL:
0 - 100 Km/h = 6.5sec
0 - 160 Km/h = 14.6sec
0 - 200 Km/h = 23.4sec

The 0-100kph is close enough to the S2000 and 0-160kph is even closer. 0-200kph is actually betters the best 0-200kph time for the S2000 that I've seen by 1.0 sec. That would lead me to believe that the new 500SL should be a very good match for the S2000 in terms of acceleration and even have the edge over 100kph.

ps. The Sports-Auto measured the 100=0kph braking at 35.7m.

for a car that weighs about 1400 pounds more than the S2000 but only has 60 HP more, that performance is QUITE impressive....

the new SL is one efficient automobile!

Yeah, but it more than doubles the torque.
