No, he was trying to race it was obvious I just didn't join him. RX8s aren't particularly great cars and shouldn't be trying to drag race anything. Most people don't think our S should be dragged either, but at least we're not a complete joke.

The controversy continues...
According to some reputable people, the RX-8 goes into a 'safe mode' when on the dynomometer and will not make all the HP it is capable of. I have no idea how true that is, however here are some interesting facts that might support the 238 (or so hp Mazda claims):
The RX-8 races in Grand Am Cup ST class, the same class as the Acura TSX and the SC Chevy Cobalt. There have been several rule changes so far this year in regards to making the three cars more even.
http://www.grandamerican.com/Competition/Bulletins.asp
Tech Bulletin 2005-001:
TSX - Min weight =2600 lbs, Intake Cam, Exhaust Cam, Exhaust Header and throttle body
Cobalt - Min weight = 2450 lbs Supercharger pulley and Exhaust
Tech Bulletin 2005 - 002
RX-8 Min Weight = 2650 lbs
Tech Bulletin 2005 - 004
Cobalt Min weight = 2400 lbs
Tech Bulletin 2005 - 011
Rx-8 Min weight = 2700 lbs
TSX min weight = 2500 lbs
http://www.grandamerican.com/CONTENT/Docs/...0GAC%203-28.pdf
The TSX runs 700 lbs LIGHTER than stock with a non stock Intake/exhaust cam and exhaust system
The Cobalt runs 400 lbs light than stock with a different SC pulley and exhaust
The RX-8 runs 230 lbs lighter than stock and I believe it has a different exhaust and runs with an RPM limit ( around 8500).
Depending om how much HP the TSX makes (I know stock = 200 hp) with the Cams and header, combined with the 700 lbs of less weight should help indicate the possiblle true HP.

Here's an interesting fact about a Rx-8.
Rotary engine owners can bring tht when the car gets older it gets faster.
Car and Driver did one of those year long test drives.
When the first got it, car went 0-60 in 6. (something seconds) and the quarter mile in 14 point something seconds.
When it had around 20-30,000 miles. did 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and broke into the quarter mile in the high 13s. Not bad for the car.
I really want to hear about somebody racing a turbo'ed rx-8. wonder how fast those things are.

Yes, most cars get faster with miles on them, but not all. To further complicate things, there have been numerous ECU re-flashes for the RX-8 that have resulted in both improved power (especially lower rpm grunt) and improved mpg. These have been done over the course of two years and (in my case) 31k miles.
My RX-8 definitely runs better (faster) now 2 years and 31k miles later than it did when new.

I know a guy who's dropped about 30k into his for some custom fabrication and engine work... he's pushing ****ing 650whp!!
the thing is just a garage queen project car though... he hasn't even taken it to the track yet.
