As I don't have the energy to track down the info, can someone in the know explain to me what is going on... what is the deal behind this subculture since it's not the first time I've seen it.
For example, we're talking drifting, late model front wheel drive cars down what appears to be public highways with people parked cleverly on the edge of the road waiting to get smashed? I'm missing some pieces of the story here I think

Here's my guess at the idea behind this. Drive your car fast enough so that once you throw it sideways, the wheels lose all traction and you drift in a straightline. The idea would be to stay straight and on the road for the longest distance. If you don't go fast enough, you won't lose total traction and you'll end up flipping or veering off the road.
Now why didn't I think of that as a sport?
