Default Friendly Trial with an S15

Got a friend who had an S15, raced him many times before he modded it. Without a clutch dump, a drag was unlikely to win even. Of course, when the VTEC kicks in, I would start reeling him in.

However, after 2 simple mods to his car costing 1000 in all. (AVC-R and cat back exhaust), his car was ahead .. simply ahead, regardless of launch. However, when the VTEC kicks in, it can keep up (note: keep up, not reel in). Unbelievable!!!

Question: Trying to do dumps on the street is highly dangerous ... does anyone know just how much space is needed on the two sides? My car often sweeps a little left and right when dropped .. I am just not too sure how far that would go ... (would it ever just spin 360? or 180?)

Sounds about right.

Did you try from a 80kph+ roll? You should walk a stock one very easily.
Same goes for an S15 with a DIY T connector boost upgrade. Its a bit closer though.

With those mods at higher speeds your cars would be pretty close.

Like you said a clutch dump on the street is pretty dangerous.

If you must make sure you only do it on a smooth road surface and although the rear may kick out a bit it, in my experience it will never kick out more than 30% before correcting itself.

To spin 360 or even 180 in the dry you would have to hold the wheel on lock and dump at very high RPMs higher than what you would launch at.

I friend of mine has a stock S15 200SX and we've done a few comparision .... your findings are not far off mine:

(repost as the search engine is stuiffed):
------------------------------------------
- 10 - 120kph rolling start in 1st gear - Oddly enough the 2 cars were very even even from low revs. The 200SX would get maybe 1/2 a car length, by 100kph the 2 cars are even and by 120kph the S2000 is a moving a fraction quicker. Also, whoever got on the thottle 1st seemed to win. The 1st gear in the S2000 seems very good, even at low revs compared to the 200SX. This surprised me as I didn't expect the S2000 to hold it's own from low revs.

- 10kph - 120kph rolling start in 2nd gear - The 200SX really pulled away from the S2000 here. It got good 2 car lengths on me before I got to 6k revs. Then I held him and maybe even made a fraction of the ground back but not much. The 200SX is much better at lower revs than the S2000 when out of the 1st gear.

- 45kph - 140kph rolling start in 1st gear - The S2000 wins this one. The 200SX runs out of 1st gear too fast and drops back about a car and a half. Then it slowly drops back yo about 3 carlenghts at 140kph.

- 45 - 185kph rolling start in 2nd gear - The 200SX pulled away 2 car lengths even before I knew what was happening .... felt like we were doing at least 80kph before I felt like I was holding him or let alone pulling him back. By 120kph I was pulling him back and by 165kph we were even and then I pulled away about 1 - 1.5 car lenghts by 185kph. I was pulling away then pretty comfortably.

- 30kph - 140kph rolling start in 3rd gear - The 200SX pulls away comfortrably. It pulls away good 3 - 4 car lenghts even before I'd say I'm hanging with him. I never felt like I made any of the ground back ... lost by good 4 car lenghts.

- 0 - 110kph standing start - This was hard to do as we're sitting in the cars next to each other reving the crap out of them while looking at each other and signaling each other to go. Neither of us got a good launch (too much revs 'cos we were not looking at the tachos). Anyway, I dropped the clutch from what I'm guessing is 8k revs and spun the wheels all though the 1st gear while my friend in the 200SX dropped it from 4.5 - 5k revs and sat there spinning the wheels. Me on the other hand shot of forward despite too much revs and wheelspin. I jumped about 2 car lenhts ahead by the end of 1st gear and it didn't change much by 110kph.

So in summary the 200SX is quicker than the S2000 anytime the S2000 is bellow about 6.5k revs. In VTEC (really above 6.5k revs) the S2000 is a touch quicker, though not much .... it's really above 130kph that you notice the S2000 clearly quicker. At 160kph the S2000 seemed comfortably.

wow .. great review DavidM .... yeah there are just so many permutations you could try. But in summary, anytime the S2k is below vtec, pretty much there is no competition. (Esp if they have a boost controller which gives 1 bar boost from 2.8k - 6.5 k rpm) Thats almost 4k rpm range of good horsepower whereas we only get good horespower up the range where it takes some time to build up.

But cool .. of course the s2k wasnt meant to be a straight line car. But its nice to know that at least it can hold its own when compared to a turboed car like the s15.

There was a nice experiece where I was down south toward Cape Leeuwin (down in WA) ... where I was attempting to overtake a truck about 300m away on the overtaking lane. He must have been doing about 120+ ... put it into 4th gear by accident and tried to pull at it. Got really close to him when the ovetaking lane almost ended .. fortunately the vtec kicked in about 6+ (must have been quite fast then .. cant remember) and it just inched ahead before hte overtaking lane ended ... it was like

PHEEEWWW ....

You're welcome guys .... I like doing 'tests' like this. One more thing of interest that I forgot to add - we also went together to Winton once and it was the 1st time for both of us there. We are both drivers of very similar abilty and there was always 2 - 3 secs per lap between us. Our best times from that day were 2 secs appart.

Also on the way back from the track (on the highway) we punched it from around 100kph and run up to arund 160kph. I pulled good 3 cars ahead of him in that run.

ps. His S15 200SX is stock except for the 17" wheels and good 225 rubber all around.
