Encounter with E46 M3
Just thought I'd like to share a very rare encounter I had with an E46. I was driving down Barranca in Irvine to get to Costco this afternoon when I catch up to this very nice black e46 M3 with DEEP dish 19"+ rims and an exhaust (might have been just gutted oem) that was so loud it popped my ears. My first thought was why would someone do that to such a nice car! It was the worst sound I've ever heard! Anyways.. this stretch of Barranca blvd is very barren with little cars (from Jeffery to Technology). We line up at the first light and I wasn't even thinking of racing him since I knew he would smoke me. He guns it through first gear then goes to a moderate pace. I just drive normally. The 2nd light comes and we line up again. He guns it through first gear again and again I just mind my own business. The 3rd light comes and I couldn't resist testing my car against the m3. I get the jump on the light and pull 2-3 cars by end of 2nd gear. When I hit 70mph and looked in my rear view for a couple seconds, I noticed that he wasn't reeling me in, which surprised me. I decide to stop at around 75ish and make my right turn onto technology into costco. I'm guessing he was SMG and the heavy rims didn't help much. I told this to my friend when I got back and he said the M3 wasn't racing. I'm pretty sure he was based on what he did on the previous lights and also the loud exhaust note winding out the gears was a dead giveaway. He also had a passenger and I was alone. What do you guys think?
cliff notes: got the jump on an e46 and maintained a 2-3 car lead up to 75mph.
mods: 4.57 final drive, J's header, and removed clutch delay valve.

Good run. When I had intake and exhaust, I ran against a buddies e46. From 1-3rd redline we're even and then he starts to pull. So because you have gears, the outcome sounds about right, but if the run went on for a little longer, he would have started to pull.

this may shock, but i've never heard an M3(E46) with exhaust that sounded good. they all sound like shit! but i guess you could say that for some S2k exhausts too.

u kno, its not that unbelievable. because i had similiar expereince w/ my friend's e46 M3 that had big rims. it REALLY slows the car down - especially from launch. i think on the 3rd time, he didnt launch and wasn't expecting u to go, so he lagged and that lag can cause the jump of the lead. when i catch my friend like that, it took him a while (past 80mph) b4 he can real me back in

The M3 thought you were not going to hit it after 2 attempts already and didnt do anything on the launch, he gave a half-ass attempt probably from 2nd gear to catch you. I know I sure dont stay in 1st long in the WS6, I like to short-shift before CAGS gets me, lmao.

I believe it.. I'm sure the combination of your gears and his big, heavy wheels gave you the advantage from a dig. From a roll at highway speeds though, it would have been a different story...
