Correct. Porsche uses three digit designations for it's cars and some owners prefer the numerical designation badges to the model names. The Boxster is the 986, the Current Carrera (911) is the 996. The previous 911 is the 993 and the next version will be the 997.
Bottom line.......you saw a Boxster w/a 986 Badge.

OK, thanks for all the input, but any ideas as to why it was soooo quick? It has much larger tires than any Boxster I have ever see and a competely different sound.

There are a few guys around here running around in Boxsters with modified Carrera motors in them. They are plenty quick. There is a Porsche HP outfit doing the conversions.
