Tonight we decided to line up two of my friends. The 00 M Coupe only has intake, throttle body and custom ECU tuning; where as the 02 M3 is bone stock.
1st race:
M3 got a better launch and ended up holding the lead and won by about 3/4 of a car.
2nd race:
M Coupe got a better launch and ended up holding the lead and won by about 3/4 of a car.
We saw the video taken by the passenger of the M Coupe and it clearly shows that the M3 was NOT pulling past 1st gear.
I am VERY surprised to see how well a 240 hp held up against a 333 hp M3!!
Both races they raced to about 3 gear ~ 85-90 mph and no one was pulling. Oh, both car had 1 passenger to make it fair.
It would seem even the 240hp M Coupe/Roadsters are not to be taken lightly. I always thought I was much faster, I guess not

Actually, at the top of the story it said that the M coupe had exhaust, intake & ECU. That is an easy 275-280 hp, not 240 hp. My freind had a Conforti "Shark" upgrade and K&N intake installed and was a good .2-.3 sec faster in the 1/4.

I doubt if those mod's you list are making much if any additional power. The software in particular is just not effective. The real issue with the S52 are the narrow intake runners, made that way to produce a broad flat torque range, they rob the car power up top -- and any signifigant gains in power.
It's a surprisingly close race until arond 70-75 in my experience. It's odd how different the car drives with the S54 vs the S52. Both great motors at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of how they produce power.
Having said that my 99 M ripped off a 13.63 stock at around 7k miles, so I'd imagine with a couple mods it could drop a tenth or so. Enough to play with but not beat the newer cars.
(This time jives with the 2-6 lengths I usually put on S2000's depending on how well they are driven, figure they are 13.8-14.4).

My understanding of the early (240hp) M Coupes is that they are typically underrated. Dyno results (I've heard) seem to indicate more like 260hp from the factory. Not to mention the Coupe would be a good 300-400lbs lighter than the M3.

The chip tuner claims 25-30 from the chip alone. I am very skeptical about that. I think with all three (intake, exhaust, ECU) will give around 25 hp. They recently tested a 328 in Eupean Car magazine with exhaust, chip and intake and got a 18.9 hp increase so 25 on an M3 is very likely. Every read I have seen has the SMG about .2-.3 slower than the manual (manual 13.2, the SMG was 13.4, manual 13.3, the SMG was 13.5). This is very plausible.

weight is a factor. also, if the m3 has alot of options, it could make it even heavier. the 3500 pounds for the m3, is w/out any options. also, there is the driver factor. either way, good race. m coupes are cool cars.
