I should add that I have seen many Elise owners with the sides of their cars taped up. In this case it's because (when using track tires) there is a 100% chance of the front tire rubber being thrown up onto the area just in front of the rear tire.
If you don't like to clean the rubber off your car, then I can see doing this. It does make the car look silly, but it's one example where the time spent putting on the tape is pretty much guaranteed to be less than the time it would take to clean off the rubber.

because some people want thier car to be pretty. I can accept that.
But back to the painting anology would be to wrap the brush in blue painters tape so that it doesn't get paint on it.
