I'm going through my second reading of the suspension chapters of Tune To Win; motion ratios and the like. Can you explain the "fundamental errors?"

I only ask because you've obviously got a lot of experience, but then, so does he.

Thanks

Derek
ditto, I'm interested as well.

I've nearly read the entire book (except aerodynamics/cooling) three times. Not really something you read once, you must read it over and over. I'd like to pick up some more books as well, suspension dynamics are great!

I started a thread about a month ago regarding the HP Book "How To Make Your Car Handle". Problem is, it's 25yrs old and while the basics haven't changed, many more things have. From what I found, the book is still in print but no updated version has been printed.

I agree. A lot of other later books refer to this book by Fred Puhn as a "bible" of sorts. I am sure vehicle dynamics has not much changed since 1976. Easy reading.

No, but understanding of it has.

I don't remember what they were exactly, but mainly some of this explanations/rational/causes/effects of suspension dampers and what they do were wrong. Mark Ortiz actually wrote an article in RCE magazine awhile back that went over what Smith was wrong about.

But like I said, 98% of what CS wrote is right on the money, and IMO they're still the best books out there.

If you want to post a particular sentence/section from his book that you're unsure about, I'd be happy to offer my .02 on it.

Milliken & Milliken is great for engineering students chasing a degree, but IMO it's way too much theory and math and very little 'substance' that can be directly applied to making YOUR car go faster NOW.
That IS a text book, most non-engineers will be in way over their head.

Bumping an old thread, as it's a good one and want to add the following book.

High Performance Handling for street or track
ISBN-10:0760339945
ISBN-13:978-0760339947

It's also available on kindle app! Seems pretty easy to follow so far, some parts are a little challenging to understand but I imagine this is as novice as you will find on this subject!

I've found a lack of publications that talk in detail about damper design, function and tuning. RCVD, for all its depth, nearly glosses over the Damper section and left me wanting much more.

OP: If you are interested, in my search for articles/info specifically regarding dampers, I have found and saved a lot of material from around the internet. Some of the best stuff has been from class-room type material, and others are PDF snippets (such as the Mark Ortiz articles). I can email them in a zip file if you're interested, you can PM me if you like.
