Default Who left their 911 for a S2000?

New to the forum and shopping for my next sports car project. Spent most of the weekend on this forum researching the S2000. Great forum with loads of organized info! Love the FAQ threads in the racing section!

To the forum:

For those who are previous owners of any version of an air-cooled 911, active in HPDE & AutoX, if you could do it all over again would you have bought another P-Car, or are you happy with your S2000? Specifically, what do you like about your S2000 vs P-Car and vice versa. What other cars did you consider? On average what do you spend on your S2000 on an annual basis (maintenance costs, unexpected repairs, common failures, upgrades, etc)?

I sold my 993 8 months ago and looking at alternatives for track duty/weekend sports car.

Please, looking for feedback from owners that have had experience with both S2k & 911's.

Thanks for your time in advance.

I like the older 911's sort of pre 993? I like them I've seen them do pretty well on an autocross and I had fun chasing one round brands hatch once. They look like a handfull when the backend starts to come around though! I never realy considerred an old/classic car because of the potential maintainance issues.

I have 4 friends who sold their AP1 for a 996 GT3 and 2 that went for a 996 Carrera. A lucky few have picked up GTRs in the last 3 months.

I'd never part with my (37-year-old) 911. You can hammer nails with an early Porsche all day long and it just keeps going and going. There's no traction control -- no power steering, even -- the early cars are just very simple and very durable. (I don't know who thought it was a smart idea to make a production street car with a dry sump oil system, race-ready mechanicals and a drivetrain you can drop out of the car in 20 minutes, but Porsche started doing it all back in 1964.)

The 911 is a difficult car to learn to drive well. But once you've got a handle on it, other cars are pretty simple.

The newer 911 variants are more exotic, heavier, more expensive, and more complicated. They're also very expensive. (Still, a GT3 is a hoot to drive on a track.)

The S2000 is a solid, (fairly) simple, and affordable car for both street and track use. In some ways, it's like an early 911 for the 21st century.

My roommate has a 69 911T. Words that come to mind when driving it charisma, character, connection. Def not the fastest body out there, but in terms of feedback a driving pleasure they are second to none (early cars atleast)

Street 6's I take it? How do they like them?

Thats something I'm wondering: do I continue with the S or drive it for another year and pickup a 6 GT3....

I haven't exactly owned both but I'll throw in my two cents anyway.

I spent a lot of time on the track with my old Porsche 964 RS copycat. The air and oil cooled 911's are among the purest sports cars ever. They have a look and feel unlike anything else. I hate to say it, but I even like the look and feel of the older 911's over my current GT3. As Jack Olsen said, they are quirky and tough to learn to drive well but they are a very rewarding car once you do. On the downside, they are expensive cars to setup and maintain if you are taking it to the track often. They're also no where near as reliable as a Honda.

One of my buddies has an S2000 that I have spent lots of time driving and working on. It also is a very pure sports car but with lots of different qualities and quirks. It is a great handling and precise little car that does great on the track. It is more of a sports car for a person that wants something reliable, easy to maintain, and economical to own. The S2000 will always start for you. You can take it to the track, beat on it all day, and drive it to work on Monday.
