Default What is a Decent coil over for the street on the cheap;)

Hey guys
I'm thinking of putting a set of coil overs on car to improve over the stock suspension. I do not track the car so I'm not looking for top of the line setups. I'm just looking for basic adjustability and at the same time, to better what I have "stock" already.

I see pricing from $600 to $2,500 plus, this is a pretty big range in price. I know you guys that track the car know best

Will a $600 set of adjustable coil overs do as good or better than just lowering springs and stock shocks?

I have a 2000 S2000 with stock front sway and a stock c/r rear sway Eabich lower springs and stock shocks.
17" RE-11 255 rear and 225 front on BBS RGR wheels.

I feel you will kick yourself unless you get at minimum some KW v3 or Bilstein pss9. The Megan, buddyclub, anything made by Tein (unless its the SRC), Stance, anything along those lines are CRAP.
I have never touched a lowering spring so I cant comment.

if you want something a little better than stock.

CR shocks

CR shocks with swift spec R springs

Koni Yellows ( OTS ) with stock or swift spec R springs.

personally if you arent racing, just get a set of the Koni yellows and reuse your stock springs and perches. These are proven and inexpensive, easily rebuild-able and have lifetime warranty. not to mention these are probably better valved and matched than those "stanced" coilovers. you can still achieve a nice drop without sacrificing the cars handling capabilities.

let me know if you want to explore some other options. i can direct you to a good place to buy from and nice prices.

Thanks guys for the good info. The Ps9 setup looks to be in the $1,500 range, maybe $300/400 less than the stock c/r Swift setup. My thoughts, I should just spend the few hundred and get the Ps9 since there is greater adjustability.

I also have a WAY over kill for the street differential, don't figure

PuddyMod Stage 4 case, OSGiken 1.5way LSD 752kg pressure ring, Richmond 4.57 gears, and high capacity (41oz) PuddyMod diff cover.
Love this diff, improved acceleration, smooth progressive locking of the LSD and quiet operation other than a little gear whine

If you don't track the car and aren't looking for the "best" setup I'd wonder if just getting Koni single adjustables and keeping your eibach springs would be the best option. The CR suspension seems way too expensive. Better to just get some KWV3's at that price.

Oh wow shox.com has them at $1649. I bought it from them a few years back for $1350 shipped. Interesting they've gone up in price.

a while ago the PSS9 could be had under 1200. now you can probably get the PSS for 1200 or lower, not the PSS9. as for the whole KW, not to down play the v3, they are good. but ohlins just had a price drop. the ohlins DFV is another great option. IMHO the DFV's are better.

-To OP

since you already have the eibach springs i would do the Koni, they have 2 spring perches to adjust height, you can always buy the sleeves, i believe a set of the koni yellows are 600? last i saw in Tire Rack. dont get blinded by adjust-ability. most of these suspensions that have adjustable rebound have been proven to not do as they are advertised. if you are willing to spend 1600 already for the pss9 i can direct you to something way better. some one is selling TC klines DA shocks that have been revalved and matched to springs.

There have been a few sets of used PSS9s go for under $1000 on here recently.

Honestly you can't go wrong with a Koni yellow/GC setup either. I've been in a few cars with that setup and while it isn't super high end it's still a decent quality setup that doesn't cost a fortune.
