Only brand I'm familiar with is Shoei, what other brand do you guys trust your heads with?

I'm looking for a helmet that's similar in design to the Shoei Syncrotec

I can show you mine, I got it for $69 shipped. It's black/white pattern. I think Mihn has the same one if he remembers the brand.

FYI - this will/should probably get moved to racing and competition.

My previous (first) helmet was a Bell and my current helmet is a simpson. As long as it's Snell rated it's fine. Depending on who you autox with, you could consider motorcycle helmets as well.

Some common brands I've seen around are Bell, Simpson, HJC, Arai, G-Force, Zamp, pyrotect. There was some controversy with Impact racing products a while back. Probably still safe, but I'd stay away.

I use my motorcycle helmet, but all you are using it for is auto-x, I'd just get the least expensive DOT/Snell helmet that fits well, like a Scorpion, HJC, etc - you won't care too much about wind noise and weight in your car.

DOT and Snell are the standards you want for safety - the rest is just fit, quality, and refinement, basically.

For HPDE I'm using an Arai GP5-S (it's marketed as the GP5-K in North America). The newest Arai GP6 series looks very nice, but also very pricey.

I put more miles on a motorcycle every year than I do in the S. That said, I wear Shoei helmets for the bike. I replace them every couple of years and use the retired one for autocross.

If I was just autocrossing, I wouldn't spend the bucks for an expensive helmet. You are only wearing it for a couple of minutes at a time, so comfort and noise levels aren't that critical. Autocross is low risk and I feel that any helmet that meets the club's requirements is fine. There are a lot of Snell approved helmets available in the $75-$100 range that would be fine.

While I agree you don't need anything too nice (ie expensive) for autox, having a helmet that can meet track day requirements can be a good investment if you can see yourself doing those in the future. No sense in trying to save $200 by buying a $100 helmet when you'll just have to buy a $300 helmet if/when you decide to take it to the track.
