VTEC during turns
#1
When I went to Thunderhill last Friday, I always hit VTEC at apex or immediately after apex. Is this right or is it good to be at VTEC before apex? If you do VTEC before apex, there's a good chance that you'll have to upshift while still in that turn(car pointing straight after apex). Is this ok or would that mess up balance?

RWD, = Come in to tha turn slow, Come out Fast.
other than that, if u gun it in tha turn u'll get oversteer
(experience with s02's)
i don't know if that answere'd ur question or not but yah.

I pretty much aim to never be out of VTEC on the track.
There are turns where the speed just doesn't work right for any gear, and you have to be below VTEC for a while, but with a 6-speed that's usually the exception.

Yes, always in VTEC around the track but of course right before turn you're braking and revs go down. So at this point before the turn, do you make sure you're in VTEC before, at, or after the apex?

yeah if you're out of vtec (ideally less than 4krpms) you should be in a lower gear.
A vtec switch over can upset the car, tho the surge is less in higher gears. It's best to stay on the high lobes as much as possible.
At thunderhill CCW, -I- use the following (before slicks)
T1: 4th
T2: 3rd
T3: 3rd
T4: 3rd
T5: 3rd
T6: 3rd
T7: shortshift into 4th (~7.5-8k rpms)
T8: 4th
T9: 3rd
T10: 3rd
T11: 2nd
T12: 2nd
T13: 3rd
T14: 3rd if you are fast enuf to stay in vtec otherwise 2nd
T15: 3rd
Just FYI. If you are finding ourself wildly out of vtec, either go a bit faster or use a lower gear. -except- T5: You will bog 3rd at the top of the hill, but once you start down the hill you'll be in vtec quickly.

What about crests and hills? There is one section of the Ring where I'm at 4th and anticipate that I would need 5th by the time I'm "landing" from the hill. It's of course very bumpy like the rest of the Ring. I normally chicken out and short shift at 7k as the back end gets squirrly after the crest.

There certainly are places on some tracks where you are probably safer short shifting so you don't run out of revs and a 'bad' place; another example is if you'll be heavily g-loaded in a turn. Better to short-shift at a stable spot, and move your next shift point to another safe place.
