Don't think that's news to anyone. The point of this post is that even though shit happens in racing, shit can be minimized, including at the HPDE and club racing level.

This makes me sick, I hope he recovers soon. This totally made me think twice about fire safety.

Last year I witnessed 2 cars totally lost to fires at HPDEs, fortunately both drivers escaped unharmed but it made me ensure the organizers have a fire safety meeting prior to the day where they outline who responds, how, where extinguishers are, and the like.

Simona de Silvestro's fiery crash Saturday at the Texas 550 and the IRL safety team's response:

&feature=player_embedded

IRL Press Release:
First and foremost, we make the safety of our competitors a priority when on the track. The primary hose on the series' safety truck malfunctioned, so the safety team had to go to the backup of the bottles. All equipment is checked prior to going on track before every race. We are examining why the hose malfunctioned to ensure this equipment failure will not happen again.

Our Safety Team consists of approximately 24 highly-trained safety personnel with a minimum of 14 attending each event - 2 trauma physicians, 3 paramedics and 9 firefighters/EMTs. Team members have an average of 20 years of experience in their respective areas. The safety team is recognized for its high standards and high performance and this problem will be addressed.

I asked my wife for a fire suit for this pass Christmas. I haven't worn it for the first 4 events this year. I'm definitely going to wear it from now on. I'm also going to install a fire suppression system as soon as I can. I also got gloves, shoes and balaclava last year.

It's a shame that something tragic like this has to happen to raise awareness about the issue. Much like about the head neck restraint system.
