Track days and Wear on Rear Axles
What are your thoughts about replacing the rear axles on a track driven car? My AP2 has 85,000 miles and is a daily driver and weekend track car. Are axles a wear item that needs routine replacing at a certain point? I'm looking at things that might need replacing before they break so I don't need a tow home from the track. Thanks!

My driver's side axle recently failed at my last track day; 118k miles. I was able to make it home.
It was the classic pitting issue. Swapped CV cups left/right and made it go away. Strangely enough, the issue didn't show up until I got in the hot-pit, 1st lap, 1st session of the day.

I've done probably 100+ track days on my AP1 with no axle or CV issues (knock wood) but I have replaced the hubs when I replaced the wheel bearings. It seems the use of aftermarket clutch components may hasten axle and differential problems.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I did install drive shaft spacers about 2 years ago when I swapped to the LSD diff so that may have helped with the CV joints.

I've gone through a few axles. Outboard CV is the one that gave out. First time, it literally snapped, and was just freely spinning disconnected from the wheel...
May have to do with how rough our tracks are.

What mileage? I've always thought about replacing both axles as insurance

I really don't remember the miles, but in the 90k range.

Anyone reliably run the DSS 2.9 axles on the track? They did have issues several years ago, but redesigned the part to include Porsche 930 style inner CV.
I've heard of workmanship issues on DSS over the years, but then again you never hear the success stories.
