So Street Touring rules state

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14.3 TIRES
Tires must meet the eligibility requirements of the Stock category with the following additional restrictions:
A. Tires must be mass-produced standard production tires designed for normal highway use on passenger cars. Low volume and/or spe- cialty tires will be specifically excluded below.
B. Tires may have section widths up to and including the following: STF, STC, STS, STR (AWD) – 225 mm
STX (AWD), STU (AWD) – 245 mm
STR (2WD) – 255 mm
STX (2WD) – 265 mm
STU (2WD) – 285 mm
C. Tires must have a minimum UTQG treadwear rating of 140 and a minimum molded tread depth greater than 7/32” as manufactured.
D. Tire models must not appear on the following list, which may be altered at any time by the SEB upon notification of the membership.
Pirelli P Zero Corsa
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to Tire Rack the BF Goodrich G-Force Rivals are at 7/32" tread depth.
Being that BFG and SCCA just extended their partnership through 2014, I imagine this tread legality will be .....fixed, somehow.

P.S 255/40 dropped to $211/tire from $230/tire

Thoughts?
Key word. As manufactured.
Forgive my ignorance but I don't understand. Is there a difference in tread depth from when it's manufactured to when it's sold to the general public? Or am I misunderstanding this.

Thanks

I believe that if it didn't say "as manufactured" it would conceivably be illegal to shave them, or use them once the tread got below 7/32.

I think Rad is saying the rule would need to state "greater than or equal to 7/32" as manufactured" in order for the Rival to be included. As it is currently worded, a tire manufactured at 7/32" tread depth is not technically included.

Yes, that's what I'm saying, thanks.
Not that I think this tire would actually not be allowed given the SCCA partnership with BFG through 2014, but just wanted to bring it up and get thoughts.

As Manufactured - meaning actual measurements taken of a released tire. This prevents a manufacturer from actually releasing a tire at 5-6/32 but having an official report for (7,8,9/32 etc.

street tires keep getting softer
Reports from the NOLA test indicate that the new BFGs wore significantly better than either the Toyo or the Hankooks, so while they seem to be faster, they don't appear wear faster.
They were certainly wearing, but the structure is such that it will happen in a more controlled and even manner. This implies better contact patch control which provides more consistent grip, easier to drive.

This is the front outside tire from an MX5 that ran the skid pad all day with 40 drivers. It's worn for sure and even has a taper in the center section. The feathering was minimal do to the 20 degree angle of the inside edge of the tread blocks. The amazing thing was how consistent the grip was even after heating up.

Well then this begs the question "who measures the tire tread depth?"

I also add that manufacturer liability prevents it from releasing a tire with substantially less tread than advertised, not solely SCCA rules. The best outcome right now if for BFGoodrich to state on its website that the actual tread depth is 7.1/32" since it is unlikely that the 0.1 can realistically be measured but it would make the tire legal whereas it currently is not until an official measurement is taken.

I ordered a set of Z2s (in my garage) and Rivals (April delivery). Been debating RTR (CR) vs STR (CR) vs RTA (WRX) this year. What I do know is that I'm sick of the wear, inconsistency and flipping of A6s for autocross. I need the hassle / fun ratio to improve and street driving to events will help that.

Our local region has a lot of cold and gritty events. Will be interesting to see how both tires do in those conditions. I'm guessing that the Z2 will still be the cool / damp tire to have, but the Rival might be a good LAP tire in the Summer.

Will be interesting to see how real world and different condition testing shake out.

The Rival looks like it's the track street tire to have. Autocross, not so sure yet.

The RS3 was found to be the fastest tire on track too, but only after enough heat. The lack of heat and sidewall softness made it a lot less popular last year in STR compared to two years ago.

I'll probably start the season on the Z2s and try the Rivals when it gets hot out.

Was told that Michelin's manufacturer materials spec it at 7/32". Not sure if they can change this after DOT approval. We could need a Fast Track rule change to make it legal.

It's up the powers that be to determine whether the tire is legal or not. With BFG being the official sponsor tire I HIGHLY DOUBT this is an issue.
