Have you compared your laptimes for shaved vs. unshaved tires?

yeah ndahi, Just about EVERY racer that runs the RA1s, agrees RA1s are useless on full thread and last just about as long when shaved.

Maybe your nissan likes tread squirm?

I have never driven on a shaved R-compound tire. Maybe I should try it and see if I get better lap times. But shaving adds about $15-20 to the cost of the tire. I have been doing really well in the SE-R Cup series last year. I lead the series from the first race to the race before last using unshaved tires. Then I stopped going road racing due to the body damage it was inflicting on my car. I also do well in TT with unshaved tires.

One of these days I will shave a set of RA-1s and see how I do with them.

I am the odd person out, always have and always will be. I do not understan how the tire lasts as long when it is shaved as when it has full tread. Shaving takes rubber off the tire. That shaved rubber will add longevity to the tire. If the tire has more tread, it will last longer even if it is a race tire.

You are right that the rubber will be more elastic under cornering with an unshaved tire, but I am willing to pay that price to get a longer lasting tire. I am not a professional racer and cannot afford shaving tires. RA1s can last me up to 10 hotlapping days.

If you're doing it on unshaved tires you are doing REALLY well. Tho they get "shaved" over time, you don't notice they get faster the closer to cord they are?

I would highly recomend getting the tires shaved atleast once.

Shaved tires "last longer" (or just as long) in the sense that they maintain their peak grip level for the same number of track miles before they "go away".

Conversely, unshaved tires last longer only in the sense that they can cover more miles before they cord. The problem is they're initially slow due to tread squirm, get a little better as they wear (but still not as good as new shaved tires), and then they get slow again by the time they're well-worn due to the excessive heat cycles they've endured. Also, as folks have mentioned, unshaved tires are at risk of chunking early in life, which can cause them to cord just as quickly as a shaved tire.

It's your choice.

The RA1s just came in . The vendor offered 4 level of shave depth- 5,4,3,and 2. Level 5 being the least aggressive and 2 completely bald except for the two main grooves at the center. How much does everyone here usually have them shaved?

btw, 245/45/16 RA1 is a good 1" wider than V700s of the same size. Has anyone else noticed this?
