I'm trying to decide whether to replace my hubs and have CVs rebuilt or replaced.

Where do the hubs usually fail? Any suggestions for checking? I've had bearings replaced within the last couple of years as I had studs replaced. I've never replaced the hubs.

CV joints ... what are the signs of failure or that they're worn? Are the S2000's worth rebuilding or is it better to just get new?

Plugs...yeah, I hadn't touched mine in 20k miles (recommended interval is 60k I think) and one blew out during a friggin race. Bad.

As for the other stuff...I've only had one bearing/hub go out and it was the left rear. And I'm not easy on my car. You can inspect hub play (consult manual) but the first sign is you'll find that you're missing a lug nut. Then another, then another. I was hauling bricks the day before mine went out...not sure if that ****ed it up or if it was a track day.

Other than just normal mtce (fluids, pads, torquing down everything meticulously) I wouldn't start proactively replacing things before they break unless you have wads of cash or are running slicks.

... I'll be running slicks next season. I don't want to lose a hub at 120 mph.

What do you mean by missing a lug nut? Popping wheel studs?

... and WTF are you doing using your race car to haul bricks!?

Hey, it was my daily driver and I needed to put some bricks in off the back porch.

And yeah...the sign was when a wheel stud snapped...then another...and another.

Hmmm ... that's concerning as I had a wheel stud snap this season. I posted on S2KI about what could cause it. Didn't realize that it was a symptom of potential hub failure.

Hub failures have all been rears? I guess I should replace 'em.

Recoomended interval is 105K. But did you have the post-recall plugs, or were you still using the pre-recall plugs that were known to have a problem with backing out?

The pinion broke on our car at the Runoffs. That was after 2 years of racing, a Comptech diff housing, and a different LSD. Not sure what there is to check other than to replace the ring and pinion assy once a season.

Although racing cars tends to be quite a bit harder on them than "tracking" and that's what you mentioned.
