Default Second rev needle

I've always wondered this. I figured I'd ask here since I typically have only seen it in high end sports cars or race cars.

For people who have no idea, it's a needle that seems to be tracking the last highest rpm point post-shift.

Example that reminded me to ask:

To give the driver a visual indication of whether they shifted too early?

It's a tell-tale that remains (briefly, in the above case) to show where you ACTUALLY shifted rather than guessing from a moving indicator. Some remain to show what the maximum reading was, removing the argument of whether you over-revved (or whatever is being monitored).
