Default SCCA sanctioned drifting?

Good idea or Bad idea?

Seems many local clubs are worried about drifting "tainting" their own image and making it harder to secure sites for SoloII.

Didn't the SCCA sanction the Inglewood D1 contest earlier this year?

I don't have any problem with drifting as a "sport" <snicker> so long as people don't think it has anything to do with racing. And that's exactly why SCCA should stay out of it. Does SCCA really need to attract more people? Maybe my region is an anomoly but we usually only get 3 runs per Solo II event because of the large turnouts.

I must have missed the memo, what does drifting have to do racing? Drift contests would most likely appeal to a different group than the track racers so they could potential improve membership numbers. It might be a win for SCCA, but I can't help but say "WHO CARES?"

If these events came at the cost of the already limited number of available track dates, I'd be inclined to fight against the adoption of this kind of series.

Drifting is racing, with flare.

It is racing as they pass and stuff. Anything is racing be it office chair or formula one.

I think drifting is dumb. Its like racing, but with neon.

top PRO dorifto are all pro racers, and include those who have competed in CART, IRL, JGTC and
LeMans(GT winner) amongst other series. In UK, they call it SIDEWAYS Challenge and the two year champ is Lotus chassis engineer, and many top racers competing flounder.

What do you think WRC is doing, and they are not even involved in competitive passing. Rhys Millen rally driver did great getting into final 16 at D1 Irwindale....and had the biggest sh_t eating grin i've ever seen of any race car driver who just lost....even bigger than most i've ever seen win.

Drifting teaches car control over the limit and makes you a better grip racer. and its fun........RIP Supra TT

Driving hard/auto-x teaches car control.

Drifting shows you have the skill to control the car, no matter how slow you might actually be.

As a legit racer on another board said - Racing is trying to keep the car right at the ragged edge of adhesion, believe it or not, it's a whole lot easier to drive over the edge than to keep it right at the edge. I've got a lot of autocross runs this year with the back hung way out and corner workers going "wheee haa". I've got a lot of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place (local no less) finishes to show for it.

I'm more than capable of drifting around an autocross ALL DAY for example, and I'd be dead last every week.

Sorry, I've just started seeing too many people starting to refer to this drifting as the ultimate in Hi-Po driving. When I watch some of the real hot shoes at events and on TV negotiate a track/autocross at the very limit, it just sickens me that it goes unnoticed by most, while someone constantly behind the car With the rear end hung out get's all the whoops and hollers.

--Man, I gotta get some decaf coffee if I'm gonna have to read about drifting.

How come so many snobs? Drifting is quite fun. Isn't that the point of owning a performance car? You mentioned you got all sickened by your autocross at the limit going unnoticed...Why do you care what other people think? Just do something for the fun of doing it. Or, do you drive this car to show people how good you are? Relax, and have fun. Try to broaden your mind.
