Dave, if you can find the correct sizes, go with the Azenis RT-615. It should be the grippiest tire. If you can not find these in the correct sizes, try the Hankook Rs2 Z212. To really get them to grip, they should be shaved.

I'm running the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01Rs on my AP1 and have no reason to change. Our region's road tire class allows all classes on STS-spec (without the width restriction) tires so I constantly have to look over my shoulder at HS cars on Azenis as well as a CSP Miata. The RE-01Rs are cheaper than the S02s and seem to be wearing well and sticking as good as to be expected from any non-R tire...

I run on RS-2's daily and their transition characteristics are weak at best. You basically have to be ahead of all steering inputs since the tire takes it's sweet time to settle into the new slip angle. The S02's are far superior and all aspects except the lousy 205 front tire. If they made a wider S02 that wasn't as wide as the rear, we'd be in business.

The 205/55/16 RE-01 R is wider than the S02, which should give you more grip in the corners. But the 225/50/16 RE-01 R is narrower than the S02, which will have an influence on the balance of the car. Which could be compensated by a bigger front sway bar. Who knows

With this being a local only thing, I probably won't go the shaving route with the street tires. Honestly, I really want to just be on my daily summer tires and drive up to the line and go... and win .... then drive home. Also, with it being my daily summer tires, I would be concerned that shaving would take too much of the treadwear/life off. Going the ST route... I wanna be on the big bang for the buck side versus the win at all cost side (i.e. V710's).

That's a tough call since I don't have back-to-back experiences. I chose the RE-01R mainly because the front was wider than the S02 and the rear was close to the S02 but definitely narrower. Since I have a Comptech bar on full stiff, I figured I'd be okay since the stagger is something on the order of .7" compared to the .5" of 225/245 R tires. The 8.3" rear width is only about a quarter/third inch less than a 245 so you haven't lost much width while getting (hopefully) better grip compared to other available tires. I went from mild but persistant understeer using V710s (225/265) to pretty neutral/mild oversteer with the RE-01R. I should note that this was full depth tread, also, and have had no issues with chunking.
I'd have to recommend a big swaybar with these, for sure...
Oh, yeah, I have no issues with these as street tires. Noise is fine so far, haven't noticed unusual tracking in/on grooves. Wear is the only hting I don't know yet but I was anticipating a new set a year anyways.
