Default SCCA Runoff Results

I have just sat down with the times from the Runoff's and the results are interesting. I am using the final qualifying times as the race was run in the wet and the results are less meaningful. I present the best time and the average time for the Cobalts, Mazdas and Hondas.

Cobalt- best= 1:47.258. Avg= 1:47.626

Mazda RX8- best= 1:48.855, Avg= 1:51.404

Honda S2000- best= 1:49.860, Avg= 1:51.757

There were 4 2006-2007 Hondas averaging 1:50.642 and 3 2004's averaging 1:53.243

There is always someone unhappy with the way the cars are handicapped but the numbers suggest to me that the Cobalts are in the wrong class and the Hondas need a weight reduction to be competitive with the Mazdas, more so with the 2004's.

Does anyone have a feel as to how much weight needs to be removed to make up the time difference? The announcers on Speed Channel throw around the number of 2 kilos equaling about 0.1 sec for the F1 cars.

I was there and ran at the event. The Cobalts DID NOT show all they had. I think there is at least another second in the car. The S2000's are not that bad compared to the RX8's we have more power and are just slightly down on handling. If the CR is classed on the same spec line as the other S2000's the handling should be improved. My team mate and I had issues all week and were not able to show what our cars fully had. I think we both could have been in the 49's. I finally got the handling issues worked out Thursday at the end of my qualifying session. It rained for the race so all bets were off.
We got the weight penalty of 140 lbs(AP2) 100 lbs(AP1)put on when the car moved from T2 to T3. The biggest issue is the rear tire which was taken away. We now have to run on a 245(max size). I have submitted to have the weight removed and I am going to submit to have the larger rear tire back. If the CR is a go we would be able to go to a 275 with the current rules.
In regards to the Cobalts, I am submitting a request for weight and a restrictor or move the car to T2 where it belongs. All the other cars are close enough in performance to show driver talent and car development. The Cobalt is fast enough to polish even the most unpolished driver. If something is not done with the Cobalt any other car does not stand a chance.

John,

What is the best way to give input to the CRB concerning changing the spec line for the S2000? I assume the more individuals that write the better. Who do you address the letter to and where do you send it?

Thanks,

Mike
