Tired of borrowing the friend's motorcycle helmet, been looking for the past couple days, lots of closeouts on SA95 helmets, like $100+ less than the SA2000 models. Does anyone know how long the SA95s will be allowed on tracks? Is it generally 15 years? The local club here allows SA90 and above for their autoX, but I don't know what tracks are requiring. What about SCCA events? Thanks in advance!

Every five years a helmet should be replaced. The foam inside of them starts to break down and no longer provides protection as well. You only have one head, you decide what you should spend.

There's nothing wrong with a newish SA95 helmet. In fact many helmets were manufactured with SA95 certification up until last year. I've only recently seen SA2000 helmets on the market.
As such a new SA95 helmet should protect you very well.
I agree that helmets should be replaced every few years and replaced immediatly if they ever get dropped or hit a hard surface.

Through December '00, the track events that I attend require SA90 or newer helmets. The autocross events that I attend will permit motorcycle helmets that are Snell or ANSI approved, and will not allow D.O.T. helmets.
The SA '95 helmets sound like a good deal. I wouldn't worry about head protection differences, just the amount of time that they will be allowed.

That's what I'm debating- is another $100 worth 5 more years of use? Or would I have to replace any helmet anyways? Sounds like I should bite on the SA95, since those will be allowed until 2005, then I would have to replace the helmet anyways, even if it was an SA2000.
Thanks, everyone!

SCCA autox rules allow the current certification level (Snell 2000 right now) and the past 2 certification years. So, SCCA autox allows M/SA90 until the 2005 certification becomes available.
Your SA95 would be good for 9 years...

Body shops usually have the best deals on painting helmets. I was going to get my black helmet with the iriduim blue visor painted, and I checked out a few spots. A free beer at s2k days to the first person NOT already in the know that can figure out what it would be....
