Default Noisy Transmission? Bad bearing or clutch buzz

So I'm posting here because it's my favorite subforum and I find the signal to noise is better here. Sorry. (and my car is an STR car)

Right now, when the car is cruising under light load there is a vibrating kinda grindy sound but when you step on it, it goes away. Now, I didn't really notice it before I installed the Innovative engine mounts. Also, it sounds a lot like the clutch buzz kinda noise.

It's either that some bearing in the transmission is going out or it's the clutch buzz noise being highlighted because of the stiff mounts. Any idea? My car has 101,XXX miles but it was babied up until I bought it with 68,XXX and then you know what happened. It also has a newish clutch that was installed about 25k ago and it's the new clutch so the typical AP1 buzz isn't really all that bad compared to the original clutch.

Thanks!
Matt

Was the pilot bearing changed when you did the clutch. Mine makes so much noise off throttle but i just chalk it up to clutch buzz from springs.

Yes, the pilot was changed.

My immediate thought was pilot/throwout bearing. Is it only rpm specific? Could just be the natural frequency of the rotating components being magnified by the stiff mounts, as you suggest.

Yeah mine sounds like it has an evil army of bees in it. Running smooth as ever though with the occasional kitchy second gear syncro.

Yeah, after conferring with Jim Reyenga who did replace the output shaft bearing in his AP1 tranny, I have a feeling it's just typical noise that's been exasperated by the motor mounts. Come to think of it, I did notice the noise at about the same time I did the mounts. I'm sure it's just clutch springs and natural frequencies that Honda damped pretty will with the juicy fruit mounts.

What durometer mounts did you go with? Did you do the tranny ones too?

I got the 70a's and I did not install the transmission mounts as it's not STR legal. The mounts aren't bad at all in terms of vibration. I may have a slightly elevated sense of tolerable but really, it's not bad.

I experience the same with my Innovative 75a Mounts. This is on a new clutch and pilot bearing.
