The part that mounts to the shock shaft and has the 2 bolts to mount to tower.
A strut tower brace bolts onto the pillow ball

A pillow ball mount is a solid metal plate with a spherical bearing that locates the top of your shock or strut. It replaces the stock mounts, which are normally a metal sleeve pressed into a rubber bushing on passenger vehicles. The rubber bushings in normal mounts deform under load and this can cause dynamic alignment changes under load. The pillow ball mount is all-metal to reduce/remove this potenial deformation. But that also can introduce other issues like friction and noise if the spherical bearing in the pillowball mount is not properly maintained and lubricated.

In theory, the pillow balls mounts should make the biggest difference on a car with a strut type suspension, and less difference on a car with a double-wishbone suspension because a strut carries more suspension loading forces than a double wishbone shock does.

Nice explanation. That's the same reason shock tower braces doesn't make much of a difference on cars with double wishbones.
