So that's what the gas lines look like w/o that rubber around them. Removing that rubber (like in your pic) would make adjusting my Konis MUCH easier.
Any downside, experts say ................... ?

I don't see any signifant downside. You might want to cover up the opening in the box that surrounds the gas tank to make sure if that ever leaks the fumes/gas goes under the car not in it.
