Default Looking For a Helmet

Im looking to buy my first helmets for me and my wife. We are tired of borrowing helmets at Auto X events. Also we will be doing some upcoming HPDE events as well, we don't want to break an arm and a leg on a helmet but I know its you get what you pay for. Whats is the favored place to order a brain bucket from? And what is it exactly that I should be looking at on the helmet, to make our selections?

Thanks

I recommend a full-face helmet, but since you've done a few events, I'm sure you know what you're looking for. Keep in mind, some tracks require fullface helmets, whereas auto-cross usually does not. Be sure to check your local rule book.

The most popular beginner helmet around is probably the ZAMP FSA-2. It retails for around $170, and is perfect for the weekend warrior class. I tried both that and a more expensive carbon fiber model, and the weight was marginal. The main thing you want to look for when purchasing a helmet (other than to make sure and try it on) is for SA2010. The revisions are done every 5 years, so the 2010's are the latest.

Again, if at all possible, I would personally find a race shop around your area and try the helmet on before purchase. Although you may know you need a S/M/L/etc, the actual fit for all helmets are different.

Any other questions, let me know.

I would recommend you try the helmet on before buying because the sizing and fit vary quite a bit. I second the recommendation of getting an SA2010 rating.

Not to thread jack, but on another note, for autocross, are new dirtbike helmets approved? I know for track days they are note qualified, but I am not sure about autocross events?

I'd hate to buy another helmet if I dont have to. I have a brand new helmet that reads DOT and SNELL approved.

As long as there's the Snell sticker inside under the lining that says "M2005" or higher then it'd be fine for autocross. Based on your second paragraph I'd expect it to be just fine.

Slick, It depends on the organizer. Most are perfectly happy with a DOT and/or SNELL motorcycle helmet but a select few aren't. You'll most likely be fine for 98% of autocrosses but I'd recommend you call and verify before you sign up and drive out.

Thanks for all the information, I now know what to look for. I really like the Simpson bandit but it seems so much to pay when I can get a zamp, or even a hjc
