I know some people who have really been f'ed up by karts, and that's at the low speeds of a rental place.
Twice I almost broke a leg in somewhat low-speed accidents in rental karts (at K1 and Adams). Still have a hard bruise after 19 months. But not a scratch when I totalled my car in a wall at Sears .

If Jimmie Johnson or Fernando Alonso owned a brickmaking factory, would that make brickmaking the best way to learn to be a racer?
Nah, we all know Tony Stewart wins at the BrickYard.

I have a kart track in my home town. It doesn't mean I race them asshat. The point is that karting is not for everyone and it's not a great way for fully grown adults to start in motorsport. When you become one you'll understand.

Let's be honest -- like most other pro sports, there isn't ANY way for fully grown adults to start the sport and get to the top levels.

So for amateur racing, I think you ought to just start racing whatever is both 1) affordable to you and 2) fun to you. If that's karting, go for it. If it's not, don't feel like you must start with karts because X Y and Z pro racers did it. Unless you are starting before about age 15 and your parents have access to an ungodly amount of money, you aren't going to be a pro racer anyway.
