If you get a hard top for protection, get Izzy's solid mounts instead of latches.
Also consider a "Halo" type seat to protect your head from side impacts.

Check eBay and eBay UK for race suits. You can sometimes find top end used F1 crew suits for about the same price as a new middle of the road Sparco or Aplinestars.
For example:

I've seen newer suits go for less than this. Its $700 after shipping and exchange rate, FYI.
I would have gotten a seat with a halo but my car is my daily driver and I didn't want to lose the peripheral vision.
As for side to side protection that is why I didn't go with a HANS, and got the Safety Solutions R3.

I think the main thing is to be consistent in your safety. For instance, if you add bucket seats and a harness, you should have gloves because it may take you an extra second in a burning car to get out. Similarly, the more "strapped in" you are, the more fire protection you need in suits, socks, etc.
Fully welded doors=thick suits...

I'm in the same boat, I just installed a roll bar with lower harness bar and I'm heavily leaning towards the Cobra Evolution Seat and since I'm a bigger guy running a quick release steering wheel to help speed up egress in case of an incident...
I will definitely be getting a HNR, 3.2A/5 suit, and better gloves before my next outing. I'm an old drag racer and I feel naked/insecure without the proper safety gear...

You could bolt in the halo seat for racing.
