I would recommend a full face. On my last trip to the track I got really loose and went off the track. I didn't spin completely, but I was sideways enough to kick up some dirt clads, and one came into the car and nailed me on the left side of my chest. That hurt, but would have been worse taking it directly in the mouth.
I bought a full face M2000 helmet last year, for $130 (it was the cheapest and I wasn't sure how often I was going to use it). Open faces were about $85. I will probably get a SA rated one soon. I didn't realize how hard kicking this track habbit was going to be.

Okay guys, help me out here. The most popular and common helmet in the world seems to be Bell, yet I don't event see it mentioned here. Is there some known problem with Bell helmets?
Please let me know, cause I was just about to buy one for about $129.00.
Thanks.

I use a Bell Mag 4 and find it to be very comfortable. It's an open face design that allows much more airflow to the face than a full face helmet. Which Bell helmet can you buy for $129? Sounds like a good deal.

Yup, Bell does make good helmets and there are some out there. And as fluxen mentioned - open vs. closed faced helmets have been discussed quite extensively in the past - but my two cents is: I can't stand being hit by road debris that hits me in the side of my face, so I vouch for a closed helmet. CoralDoc doesn't have that issue. Some other drivers in an auto-x only or majority of use, will not need that kind of requirement/safety measure to be met.

Let me clarify my wildly confusing earlier statement: A closed-face helmet is far safer for a number of reasons. Not only the hypothetical hitting your face on the wheel situation, but everything from road debris (and it does happen, all the time in fact) to fire protection. From a pure safety standpoint, I can't see any argument that open face is safer.
Sorry for not being clearer earlier.

Thanks guys. I'm going out to buy the Bell now (closed face with vents!).
