I put my hardtop on when I go to track days because I feel that is offers more protection than nothing at all, but if there is some proof otherwise, I'd want to know so I don't cause more injuries if I should ever flip/roll (knock on wood).

The hardtop is only attached at 4 places and it's aluminum, which will tear/collapse easily. The only protection I see is from debris being thrown at you and keeping your hands inside the car. There's no way it's a structural piece - it'd weigh like a regular car roof if it had enough bracing and strength to even attempt to hold its shape in a rollover...
