Hardtop vs roll cage

Default Hardtop vs roll cage

If I install a Hardtop on my car would that substitute for a roll cage in NHRA rules? NHRA says convertibles running 13.99 or faster need roll cage. I don't wanna ruin the car what if I put a hardtop. Is it considered as a coupe with the hardtop?

I'd check with NHRA for the proper definitive answer. If they're concerned with rollovers then the fact is the hardtop won't do much for protection. It's not really a structural piece.

I'd be seriously surprised if they considered the hardtop a viable option to a roll cage. It's made of aluminum is its pretty light; I don't think it'd do well in a roll over at all.

Even if the sanctioning body accepts the hardtop, it is not going to save your head in the event of a rollover.

It will help to keep debris from entering your car if you spin off into the dirt about as well as the convertible top does, but that's about it.

Now I understand that the hardtop is in no way close to the protection in a rollover as a rollcage, but how can you say that it offers NO additional protection? It is still a rigid piece of metal firmly attached to the car at 4 points.

As a matter of fact the top might come loose and enter the cockpit and unless you wear body armor it would likely hurt you pretty bad.

The elda rollbar is about 1/3 the price of a new hardtop and looks great.
