That is THE cheap track car.
E30 325is is also a nice cheap track car. E30 M3 is about 2-3 times as expensive as an E30 325. Up in the Pacific Northwet, these are known as Pro3 cars (in Conference racing).

Russ's car is not a Spec Miata. (I think there was an actual Spec Miata race car there, though, so my apologies it that's what you meant.)
I sat in Russ's car and in the Spec Miata. Both were not anywhere close to a decent fit for me. I can barely fold my legs, wearing shoes with no sole or heel, into the S2000 with the seat all the way back. My thigh is only an inch or so from the steering wheel.

Miata's are very claustrophobic.

Interesting idea, especially getting a good body, etc. with a blown engine for a very low price. Can roll protection be put in an S2000 which will give me plenty of leg and headroom?
yes with a bar like I posted a pic of you'll have full travel of the seat, so you'll be able to get just as much room as you have on a stock car. seat will be lower too, and with a smaller steering wheel you should have plenty of room.

If you're ever out this way (bay area - santa cruz) you're welcome to come sit in the race car. (tho my seat can still go back another 1" it should give you a good idea.

Yeah, it's not a bad track car, either. I did a school in the monsoon rain last March in Spokane in which Steve also participated.

A bit steep for my purposes, though, since I'm more interested in a track car than an autox car (my S2000--stock except for a Gendron from sway bar--is fine for my skill-level of autox).

I also agree that a E30 M3 is a bad choice. Unless you are absolutely in love with them, stay away. E36s are in general stronger cars than E30s, and the 4 cyl M3 engines are indeed a nightmare.

For the same amount of money that you need to get a track S2000, you can get a 95 or 96 E36 M3. You only need some specific reinforcements and you'd be good to go. Plus you have the torque with those.

Thanks; I may take you up on that. Building an S2000 is an attractive idea, for the right price.
